Happy Summer!

Here is hoping that everyone is having a fantastic summer.  As promised there are several items posted on the student's corner and there are lots of links for games to play to keep your skills sharp over the summer.

A big thanks to all of those who have taken the time to connect with me over the summer either through e-mail or by sharing documents on Google Docs.  It is great to know that you have not forgotten me just yet.

Enjoy what is left of your summer.....and hopefully we will see each other in the fall.

Happy Summer!

Happy Friday!

Students are working on two projects now....one for Health (Grade 5 & Grade 6) and one in Social Studies (Grade 5 only)

Health Project - Students are creating a brochure about the harmful effects of alcohol (grade 5 or 6) or tobacco, marijuana or another drug (grade 6).  The brochure has three parts:

1) Harmful effects of the substance (This is the largest section)
2) Strategies for avoiding exposure to unwanted substances, situations and peer pressure
3) A section on where to seek more information and help (Trusted adults, police, kids help phone, websites etc.)

Social Studies Project - Grade 5's are creating their own magazine about First Nations Before European contact.  They will include:

1) Map of early North American migration,(done)
2) A short explanation of Scientific Origin Theories,
3) From the Editor page
4) Letter to the Editor
5) Creation Stories
6) Map of First Nations Language Groups
7) Map of First Nations Traditional Ways of Life
8) Comparison of Traditional Ways of Life
9) Social Structures
10) Environmental Interactions
11) Lifestyles (Food, clothing, housing etc.)
12) Trade
13) Case study of one specific First Nations group
14) Extras!......Cartoons, advertisements, puzzles, how to section, stories from First Nations.

We will be working extensively on this for the next few weeks and I encourage the students to check out both the Social Studies page on this blog and also the Health page on the blog to use the links for further learning!

Happy New Year!

Welcome back everyone!  I hope everyone had a great break and I am looking forward to seeing everyone when we get together during class.  We have lots of new information to learn about in all subjects so I hope everyone is ready to learn!

I have added a new page to our blog for Social Studies.  If you click on the link at the top of this page you will find additional resources that will help you to learn about Canada's First Nations and early explorers.  We will be using these resources as part of our learning adventure.

I have marked everyone's letters that were written before Christmas and I am looking forward to reviewing them with you.  We will have lots of opportunities to practice letter writing throughout the year as our T.W.A.S. is written in a letter format.  Don't forget to get your parents to write back to you!

See you Monday!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Bain

Hello Class!

Congratulations to all the Grade 5's who studied for their Science test and got an A- or better!  Spectacular!

This is a quick reminder to make sure you wear appropriate clothing now that it is getting colder.  We are in a portable and with the door constantly opening and closing it is hard to maintain a constant temperature....so bring a sweater!

Reminders:   Day 1 is Gym Day and Day 4 is Library Day.
Wednesdays are Pizza Days and Litter free lunch days!

Science Test Reminder!

Our grade 5 students have been working hard on their science unit and are preparing for their test on Monday, December 5th.  This will be the first of two tests that will be administered this week.  Students have reviewed and studied with friends, taken a practice test and are well on their way to successfully completing this unit within the next week.

Once the science unit is finished we will begin to explore Social Studies......First Nations and European Explorer in New France. Students have had a short introduction to this unit a couple of weeks ago with a viewing of the first episode of "Canada - A People's History".  We will delve deeper into this subject over the coming weeks with both in class activities and some independent research.

Don't forget to check out the Literacy and Math pages for more information on those subjects.
